Weaving together languid, hazy psych-folk and shambolic art-rock, flecked with traces of reggae and the occasional alt-squall, Israeli artist Sivan Langer delivers an engaging new chapter in his musical journey on Rough Mix. Drawing inspiration from various realms: art, nature, cinema, and beyond, Langer always centers the story. He’s utilized those many inspirations to develop a musical palette that is as sophisticated as it is diverse.
Langer’s journey into the world of songwriting began when he decided to form a band with a couple of his schoolmates He dove into a furious exploration of the guitar, immersing himself in the iconic sounds or 90s rock and grunge. Soon enough his musical tases grew to encompass jazz, experimental rock, and lo-fi bands. It was a journey that led him to appreciate the conceptual ideas behind the music as much as their sonic manifestations, leading to a genre-agnostic output that was rewarded with placements on Apple Music “New in Rock” playlists as well as Spotify’s “Post Grunge Society.”
Rising to the challenge of an artist creating in a hostile environment, he was determined to fulfill the vision he had for Rough Mix. Even with limited resourced, Langer found ways to persevere and even excel. Teaching himself wiring, acoustic theory, and carpentry, he meticulously built a home studio; from the assembly of acoustic panels to installation of the electronics, to tracking and mixing, Rough Mix exemplifies the concept of “DIY”.
